Celeste Barber
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that this summer Australia was subject to devastating bushfires which took the lives of countless people and wildlife. Celeste, an Aussie actor, writer and comedian was a household name this year after her amazing efforts saw her Facebook fundraiser being the largest in Facebook’s history! She began with a humble $50,000 goal and ended up raising over $50 million!
“As Aussies, we band together because we have to look after each other” - Celeste
Jacinta Adern
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinta has taken the political world by storm since she took on the role in October 2017. The grace with which she handled the devastating Christchurch shooting, her down-to-earth mannerisms and her feminist views are just a few things that make Jacinta the powerful woman she is!
“It is a woman's decision about when they choose to have children, and it should not predetermine whether or not they are given a job or have job opportunities.” - Jacinta
Kim Kardashian
The queen of controversy, Kim K. The woman that everyone has an opinion about , however, we’d be lying if we said that Kim hasn’t made an impact this year with regards to American prison reform. Since beginning work with the White House in 2018, alongside Alice Johnson, a woman in her sixties serving a life sentence for a first-time drug offence, being granted clemency. Since then, her work has grown tenfold and she truly has used her platform to shine a light on the issue.
“…Her (Alice) commutation and release is inspirational and gives hope to so many others who are also deserving for a second chance… I hope to continue this important work by working together with organisations who have been fighting this fight…”
Lizzo
When we think of positive body image one major name comes to mind, Lizzo. The 31 year-old singer oozes confidence and a whole lot of sass. To say she embodies what it means to be comfortable in your own skin is an understatement and the best part is, we LOVE her for it!
“My movement is for everybody. My movement celebrates diversity. It’s all about inclusion. It’s all about getting our flowers and giving each person their own space to be an individual and speak up for that individuality.” - Lizzo
Kylie Jenner
If you thought earning more cash was the main purpose of Kylie Jenner’s cosmetic launches, think again. Kylie recently took to the Ellen Degeneres Show where she donated $750,000 to Nest of Love; a women's empowerment group for the next generation of leaders.
“I just want to inspire my fans to be whoever they want to be, because that’s what I’ve always done.” Kylie
Ellen Degeneres
Speaking of Ellen, it’s no secret that the talk-show host is top of mind when it comes to powerful women making a difference. Between starting and funding her own gorilla conservation fund, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and other wildlife organisations, constantly giving back to deserving families on her show and so many other efforts, Ellen truly is an icon when it comes to giving back!
“When I was younger I thought success was something different. I thought, "When I grow up, I want to be famous. I want to be a star. I want to be in movies. When I grow up I want to see the world, drive nice cars. I want to have groupies." But my idea of success is different today. For me, the most important thing in your life is to live your life with integrity and not to give into peer pressure, to try to be something that you're not. To live your life as an honest and compassionate person. To contribute in some way.” - Ellen
Vanessa Bryant
To lose a loved one by any means is a difficult process for any individual. Vanessa Bryant has devastatingly had to go through the grieving process in the public-eye after losing both her husband, former NBA star Kobe Bryant, and her daughter Gianna. Not only has she handled it like an absolute #queen but she has continued carrying on her husband’s legacy through his newly re-named foundation Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation which aims to provide opportunities to young people through sports.
“We hope to empower young athletes in a world they left us all to help shape.” - Vanessa
