Jumpsuits and playsuits have been around for a long time, with pilots, drivers, sportspersons and manual labourers donning the one-piece for decades. The jumpsuit first became a popular fashion choice in the 60s, stayed popular throughout the 70s and peaked during the disco era. By the 80s men had dropped the look, but women were still seen wearing the one piece for a night on the town for years. Then the trend vanished in the early 90s.
Jumpsuit comeback
We are happy to report that the jumpsuit is well and truly back, and this time it’s an even hotter look. Designers have mastered the tailoring of this all-in-one outfit and offer a range of different styles to suit everyone. Whatever you do, never confuse the jumpsuit with a pyjama style ‘onesie’, no matter how cool people say they are.
As well as the modern jumpsuit, vintage jumpsuits can offer a retro flair to any wardrobe. Both jumpsuits are considered statement pieces and are comfortable to wear.
How to wear
The all-in-one outfit is not the easiest trend to get right, but pulled off correctly you can look super sophisticated and stylish.
The key to the perfect jumpsuit is its silhouette. The fit should be comfortably tailored, yet cinched in at the waist to highlight your curves. Make sure that there is enough height in the pant to ensure no bunching or pulling.
A jumpsuit should be daring and feature bold prints or colours. Think florals or polka dots. For a fresh, summery look, opt for a bright cobalt blue strapless jumpsuit like Evangeline Lilly recently did. When darker colours like black or navy are used, the cut should be daring, such as Bella Thorne’s black playsuit worn to a recent Beyonce concert.
A jumpsuit in itself is a statement piece, so jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Team with a simple pair of heels and a clutch to finish off the look, and keep your hair simple.
Celebrities getting in on the trend
Nina Dobrev recently showed a perfect example of how this trend should be done when she arrived at the recent Young Hollywood Awards. The 24-year old Vampire Diaries star opted for a floral jumpsuit that showed just the right amount of cleavage, giving the look an edge.
The form-fitting jumpsuit featured a stylish peplum top and the colour was right on trend with bold florals. The young actress finished off her look with simple black strappy heels, a patent red leather clutch and her hair tied in a simple ponytail.
The sometimes wild Miley Cyrus looked sensational at the 2013 Maxim Hot 100 Party wearing a black and white strapless Valentino jumpsuit. The back of the jumpsuit featured an elegant oversized bow, providing that extra detail for impact.
Kristen Stewart was seen at the 2013 Met Gala in a sophisticated Bordeaux Stella McCartney embroidered jumpsuit and coiffed hair.
Jennifer Hudson made use of bold colour by opting for an emerald jumpsuit at the Project Runway Spring 2013 Fashion Show, which she teamed with a matching blazer. A gold belt and coral lips finished off the look perfectly.
White jumpsuit trend
If you can’t bring yourself to look for bold colours or prints, then turn your attention instead to white, which has been seen on a number of celebrities. Nicole Ritchie recently stepped out in a white jumpsuit, and if this stylish reality star is doing it, you know it must be a hot look!
Ritchie’s jumpsuit featured a deep V neckline and wide pants, which offered a touch of playfulness to the look. Worn over a black satin crop top and teamed with black-and-white heels, the star perfectly showed off the monochrome style.
Eva Longoria also stepped out in white, showing that jumpsuits can look casual chic as well. Her choice of painter-style whites with blingy heels and oversized sunnies looked effortless but super cute.
Kelly Rowland was spotted in an ivory halter-necked jumpsuit with sheer panels above the waist. Teamed with a high bun and gold hoops, the former Destiny’s Child singer looked glamorous.
